SCAE World of Coffee, Vienna 2012: THE LATEST SHOW NEWS FROM SCAE WORLD OF COFFEE 2012
Europe’s largest coffee industry event, SCAE World of Coffee, Vienna 2012, is well under way in Vienna and buzzing with activities, workshops, competitions, forums and the trade fair as well as all the latest news from the coffee industry throughout the world.
Tuesday saw the start of the exciting World Barista Championship, World Brewers Cup, World Cup Tasters Championship, and the Cezve/Ibrik Championship. The purpose built arena-like WBC theatre is attracting hundreds of spectators each day and all eyes on the big finals that take place this Friday. Especially designed for the many exhibitors at SCAE World of Coffee Vienna, the New Product of the Show Awards, sponsored by Truvia were hotly contested. Winners were announced on Wednesday evening with the following companies proudly accepting their awards…
For ‘Best Coffee Related Product or Machine’
- WINNER: GOTEC - GO1 espresso machine.
- HIGHLY COMMENDED: IKAWA Digital Roasting
For ‘Best Non-Coffee Beverage’
- WINNER: Espresso Warehouse: Suki Lemongrass & Ginger Iced Tea.
- HIGHLY COMMENDED: Natvia Sweetener
For ‘Best Food/Bakery Product’
- WINNER: Zuma Yogurt Frappe from Beyond The Bean
And finally for ‘Best In-Store Product or Service’
- WINNER: Planet Coffee
Mr David Veal, Executive Director of the SCAE announced at the show that SCAE World of Coffee 2013 will take place in the spectacular location of Nice on the Cote d’Azure, France. The WCE also announced that they will be bringing the World Latte Art Championship, World Coffee in Good Spirits Championship, World Cup Tasters Championship and brand new World Coffee Roasting Championship to SCAE World of Coffee, Nice 2013. These events are used by the WCE to engage the speciality coffee community and promote coffee excellence and quality worldwide. More information at www.worldcoffeeevents.org
The annual SCAE Awards for Excellence were also presented on Wednesday. Sponsored by BUNN the awards were presented by SCAE Board Member, Lina Chiodo from BUNN.
The five awards were as follows:
Young Entrepreneur:
Presented to an enthusiastic member of the coffee industry, preferably under 30 years old. This person shows drive to persevere in their field to be successful in the trade. The winner was Coffee Circle Berlin – Martin Elwert/ Moritz Waldstein/Robert Rubnick
Changing Lives at Origin:
This award is presented to a smallholder, estate, cooperative, mill or farm in an origin that has worked or done research into improving the production or preparation of green coffee. This must be considered in relation to the green bean, the environment, or the coffee community. The winner was Jan Van Hilten (accepted the award - Mick Wheeler)
The Innovation Award:
Someone who has successfully produced something new to promote the quality of coffee. This could be in the production of drinks, promotion of the product, development of machinery and equipment or any other innovative idea. The winner was Mark Loring and Ludwig Ron Kleist accepted the award
The Passionate Educator:
Anyone who has made a concerted effort to communicate to others the wonderful pleasure that coffee can bring us. All communication tools that appeal to our five senses can be used: the spoken, written or printed word, the arts such as photography and painting, or even through music and drama……and the winner was Luigi Lupi.
Lifetime Achievement:
This person has stood the Test of Time. A person who has furthered the interests of the industry by promoting the concept of quality coffee in a statesmanlike manner. The winning person is recognised for their experience and knowledge of the trade, having their focus on the promotion of quality and the winner was Alf Kramer.
